Whippet
First recognized in 1891, the Whippet was the poor man's racehorse and was popular in dog racing. Known as the fastest animal of its weight class, the Whippet can run at speeds of up to 37 m.p.h. The medium-sized racer weighs between 25 and 45 pounds and stands at 18 to 22 inches. Whippets make excellent house dogs, but need a sufficient amount of exercise.
